What is orthodontic treatment?

Orthodontic treatment is the process of moving and realigning teeth to improve their appearance, function, and sometimes the bite (occlusion). This type of treatment is commonly pursued to address various dental issues such as crowding, gaps, misaligned teeth, and bite irregularities, which can affect both oral health and aesthetics.

The goal is to achieve a harmonious alignment of teeth that enhances the overall facial profile and ensures proper function of the teeth and jaws.

FAQs

MORE ABOUT CHILDREN'S ORTHODONTICS

At what age should my child first see an orthodontist?

The British Orthodontic Society suggests that children should have an orthodontic assessment by age 7. This early evaluation allows for the detection of potential issues with tooth alignment and jaw development, helping to plan appropriate treatment if needed.

What are common signs that my child might need orthodontic treatment?

Signs that your child might need orthodontic treatment include noticeable misalignment of teeth, an overbite or underbite, difficulties with biting or chewing, gaps between teeth, crowded teeth, or noticeable jaw problems. If you notice these issues, it’s advisable to consult an orthodontist.

How long does orthodontic treatment typically take for children?

The duration of orthodontic treatment for children can vary based on the complexity of the case and the type of treatment used. On average, treatments last between 12 to 24 months. Early intervention can sometimes lead to a shorter treatment period.

Are there advantages to starting orthodontic treatment early?

Yes, early orthodontic treatment can help address problems such as misalignment and bite issues while the child’s teeth and jaws are still developing. This early intervention can prevent more serious issues later on and often results in a more efficient and shorter overall treatment process.

Will my child need to wear a retainer after orthodontic treatment?

Yes, wearing a retainer is essential after orthodontic treatment to maintain the new position of the teeth and prevent them from shifting. Your orthodontist will provide detailed instructions on the duration and frequency of retainer use.
